The port of Gramvousa has great history as the Hellenistic period played a very important role in the development of the city. Ancient Falasarna was one of the most important cities – states of Crete and that is because the port was natural and was built in a lagoon.
The destruction of the port held by the Roman Empire (69 BC) who wanted to protect the city from pirate raids by so built stone bricks so only enter boats in it.
This resulted in the city never again back on track but things became even worse in 365 AD, where a devastating earthquake elevated the west side of Crete resulting in the port to find 9 meters above sea level. Today one can admire the naval facilities in ruins that have survived.
